The artist

Christine
Greenslade

Christine Greenslade’s paintings have grown out of a life of travel, enterprise and starting again.

Originally from Penzance, Cornwall, Christine studied Hotel Management and worked in hotels before establishing her own interior design company in the 1980s. As a single mother running a business, she built a career in hotel interiors that attracted international enquiries and coverage in national and international magazines.

The recession brought that chapter to an end in late 1992. Christine moved first to the Loire countryside in France, then to southern Spain, settling in a white Moorish village in the mountains of Andalusia.

There, without work but inspired by her surroundings, she asked a friend for something to paint on. Tables, found wood and discarded boards became her first surfaces. She experimented with sculpture, using chicken wire, resin and materials others had thrown away.

Although she returned to interior design to earn a living, painting had become part of her life. A later return to France, to renovate her old farmhouse, gave her the opportunity to paint and exhibit again.

From 2010, torn newspaper, bold acrylic colours and expressive, cartoon-like figures began to define a new collection. Her practice now includes painting, collage and portraiture, using acrylics, oils and oil pastels on varied surfaces.

Today, Christine lives in Mallorca. Her work reflects an enduring curiosity about people and everyday life, with colour, humour and a wish to leave the viewer feeling a little brighter.
